nite one--3rd of july fireworks

every year our friend melissa invites us over for her annual firework watching party on sylvan lake. last year was the first year that i was able to go but dave couldn't. so i packed up 4 year old hayden and 3 month old talan and we headed out for some firework fun.
we had a great time and were excited that we were able to go again this year with dave. this time even jessica and justin joined us. hayden seemed to remember it and even remembered melissa's cousins that he made fast friends with...unfortunately they weren't there but he had plenty of other things to keep him busy and happy.
melissa is a wonderful host and not only provided dinner before hand, but also had a whole bunch of bubbles and different bubble wands for the kids to play with. talan enjoyed sitting and chewing on a wand while swinging two others in each hand.
it's been awhile since i've used all of those old school bubble contraptions (we usually use the battery operated bubble machines because i'm lazy like that) so when i handed hayden the bubble pipe i couldn't remember how to use it. jessica, also not remembering our youth, did the same thing as i did and poured the bubbles directly into the pipe. hayden didn't seem to mind too much but jessica kept swallowing bubbles. what a dumb toy! we thought. until later when someone was helping the kids with bubbles and held out a cap with bubbles in it and told hayden to DIP THE PIPE INTO IT. oh yeah. that's how that works.
while talan continued to chew on bubble wands, dave, justin and hayden started playing soccer. a bit later several other kids came to join the fun. jessica even threw talan up on her shoulders and they started to play. hayden was ALMOST upset that he had to stop so we could walk over to the lake to see the fireworks.
i'm not sure why, but it seems like every city does their fireworks on the 1st, 2nd or 3rd of july. when the 4th comes around, if you actually want to see fireworks, it's hard to find a place that actually has them. very odd to me.
we ended up sitting in a field right in front of the community center which was apparently where they lit the fireworks off from right behind said community center. the field was really wet, and we were all soaked even though mom sent jessica with her american flag quilt for us to sit on.
the fireworks started, and not long after we realized just how close we were when we started getting hit by shrapnel and seeing embers fall slowly to the ground around us. jessica ended up getting something in her eye and i believe hayden got a little something in his eye as well. we heard a kid behind us tell his parents "i don't want it to fall on me, i'm allergic to burns." it was funny the first time but then the kid started milking it and said it another 50 times which made you want to see an ember fall on him.
thankfully the fireworks were interesting enough to keep talan in his stroller the entire time. he seemed to really enjoy them and he wasn't afraid of the noise at all...which was really very loud where we were sitting.
the grand finale was grand indeed. the sky ended up filling with smoke and you could really smell it. took us back to just last friday evening. we were beginning to think fire was following us.
we all had a good time and the whole walk back hayden was begging me to let him sleep over at "matthew's house" you mean melissa? "yeah, melissa's house." and minutes later melissa would be matthew again.
thanks for having us, melissa! we had a great time and hope to do it again next year! you may have wanted to sell your house, but we're sure glad you didn't!

talan the one-man band:
good job, jessica!:

hayden loved making sound effects while popping bubbles. he did this half the nite....probably because i was basically pouring soap directly into his mouth with the pipe:

apparently hayden and justin were fighting over who could kick the grass:
what we came for:
the gang:
probably pointing out a falling ember that was headed right towards him:
he loves shoes. he does occasionally take them off, but usually he wants them on. weird, i know:
hayden and dave can't take their eyes off of the sky:
i remember something happening right as we were taking this picture, but i have no idea what it was. either way, i thought it was kinda funny. and, grandma was just complaining about me not being in any pictures. this is as good as it's gonna get!:
the grand finale:

takin' it all in:

I knew Hayden deemed my mom Mrs. Elephant, but I didn't realize I had a new name too! Sweet!
