the nursery

after weeks of moving talan's things into his new room that he will be sharing with hayden, i finally was able to clean and put the final touches on the nursery. there isn't much of a difference from when we brought talan home from the hospital, but there are a couple things.
eventually we'll even get pictures of the baby in the room and take down the ones of talan (in and out of the womb) and we'll put the baby's name (if we have one) up above the crib.

new and improved big boy room

we never really redid hayden's room after he got out of his crib years ago. we left up the star border and just added a comforter and pillows that also had stars on them. but there was no real big room renovation.
now that we had to get bunk beds in that room so that talan and hayden could share a room, we figured it was the perfect opportunity to totally redo the room and make it into a real boys room.
after dave put down the original comforters i had wanted, i found some at ikea...and for only $19.99!! sure beats the original comforters with a price of $80!
i had decided on a skateboard themed room and knew that it would be bright. much different than the rest of the house! but what i had in my head would be perfect for hayden and talan.
we took home a ton of blue paint samples and narrowed it down to 3 choices and then had hayden pick the one he liked the best. he ended up picking the color i was leaning towards which worked out great. i also picked up a bit of lime green paint to paint some of the accessories in their room.
on the weekend i started painting the room, we also ordered the bunk beds. we figured we would wait to order them until we knew the painting would be done.
a week later, the bunk beds arrived. but unfortunately, they were damaged during shipping. we had to then wait for them to ship out new ones to us. in the meantime, we decided ups would most likely not want the old ones back, so dave put up the bottom bunk as it only had some slight dents that you really couldn't see anyway once it was put together and up against the wall. we figured we would just store the new bottom bunk that they were sending and one day use it as another twin bed.
we got the bunk beds the very next week and dave went to work putting it together as soon as he got home. as he was taking out all of the parts i noticed a bit of the wood on the top bunk headboard looked a little odd. when we got closer to check it out, we realized it was again broken.
at this point we were beyond frustrated. the house had been a mess for over 2 weeks and we were told we needed to keep the broken beds and boxes just in case ups wanted them back. at this time we realized that the 1 mattress we do have (we were only planning on having to buy 1) was so thick it left very little room under the bottom bunk and would be too far above the rail to go on the top bunk. so we set out searching for a thin, but decent, mattress.
a little over a week later we finally got our third set of beds which turned out to be good. finally!!!
a few days after dave put the beds together we went out and bought a new mattress for the top bunk and hayden was so excited to finally be able to get to sleep up top! we decided that for now, the mattress we do have would be good enough for talan for awhile. it is a little tight under there, but he's not even 3 so it'll work for now.
once the beds were up we started buying and getting all of the accessories together for the new skateboard themed room. i bought 2 skateboard decks that we would use as artwork and then found 5 blank decks on ebay that we would turn into a coat hanger and shelves. i also bought new letters to spell out the boys names and painted them green to put above the windows. dave got to work getting all of the hardware and building the shelves and coat hanger which we used skateboard wheels for the pegs. i also went out with mom to buy material and she graciously made curtains for the room (again!)
it all turned out great and we were finally able to put the whole thing together the other weekend. there may be a few things we add in the future, and we may paint some of the blank skateboard shelves but for now, it's done and we ALL love it!!!

building bears

for christmas this year, robin, sara and josh sent the boys a gift certificate to build-a-bear. i thought the perfect time to take them would be during hayden's midwinter break so that it wouldn't be on a saturday!!!
hayden had to go in to the dr. for his 7 year check-up and as soon as that was done we headed over to the mall to meet up with mom and dad (i knew i would NEVER be able to handle this alone!!!). the place was pretty much empty since we got there just after 10am, so that worked out well.
the boys walked around checking out the different animals that they could make. hayden decided to make a jack russell terrier and talan picked out a bear (after a long time of running around the store not really understanding what he was supposed to do).
the boys helped to put a heart into their animals, stuff them and then they went over to the bath station to groom them. after that we headed to the computers to name them and then we checked out.
hayden decided to name his dog "ben" and we chose the name "taz" for talan's bear. i'd ask him what the bears name was and he'd just say "i don't know." and continue running around in circles.
once we were done i went to put talan in his stroller (he is NEVER to be trusted outside of a stroller) and he proceeded to have probably the biggest tantrum he has ever thrown. it was awesome. i think dad was ready to throw himself off of the 2nd floor of the mall.
hayden wasn't happy that we had to leave on account of talan's bad behavior, but in the end hayden was able to get a treat after talan took his nap and he got to go over the grandma and grandpa's house later to spend the nite and spend the whole next day with them! so really, it worked out pretty well for him.
talan eventually stopped the screaming, and thankfully the car ride home was mostly silent. until talan asked for fruit snacks and started yelling again when i told him no.
despite the major meltdown, the boys had a great time at build-a-bear and they LOVE their new stuffed animals.
thank you robin, sara and josh!!! we love you guys!!!

bowlin' cousins

most years during hayden's midwinter break we have traveled to grand rapids for a couple of days to hang out with jenn and rainah. this year we decided it probably wouldn't be the best idea what with me being 37 weeks pregnant and all, so rainah and jenn decided to come to us. jenn had the idea to take the kids bowling which was a great plan since we haven't been in a really long time. actually, over the past several months, talan will randomly say "go to bowling pin store." for awhile i didn't know what he was talking about. and then i realized we were driving past a bowling alley and he simply wanted to go bowling. so i packed up the boys this morning and we headed to drakeshire lanes to meet up with jenn, rainah and mom. they were all so excited and they did really well. talan had never bowled a whole game by himself before, and today he bowled 2 whole games...the last one he actually won!! (hayden was NOT happy about that!) after bowling we headed back to mom and dad's to hang out for the rest of the day and to let the kids play together. thanks for coming out, jenn and rainah, and for giving us something fun to do!!
