bowling a rainbow and a bad waitress

jennie shanburn, melissa weckler and myself all had plans to go hang out back in february. then i got sick. so here we are, well into may, and we finally were able to reschedule.
it was a beautiful day out all day until about 3pm when it started to rain. it would pour for a bit and then stop and the sun would come out and it would be beautiful once again. after awhile it would pour again, stop, sun...it goes on.
we had hoped to go to paradise park to get some go-kart riding in, maybe even a round of putt-putt because that's how we roll. when we got there, there were about 500 children all having parties. seriously. they were everywhere.
so we go up to ask if we can buy tickets for the putt-putt. joshua tells us that it is much to wet out there and there are some really big puddles and he just wouldn't feel right selling us tickets to play in those conditions. ok. how about go-karts? are they up and running? nope. there is a big puddle right by the go-kart area and they simply cannot run them.
so what you're telling us is that we can hang out here in the arcade with the 500 children? awesome. we left. plan b. bowling.
we headed over to lucky strike for a couple games even though i hate their lanes. have you ever bowled on new lanes? totally different then a lane that's been there for 50 years.
jennie and i ended up tying our second game, each bowling a 90. melissa wasn't far behind...right melissa?! so there will have to be a tie breaker game in our near future, jennie, on old lanes!
after bowling we headed out for dinner. on the way we saw a great rainbow.
we ended up at the olive garden and had THE WORST waitress possibly ever. no joke. she asked if we wanted a sample of wine and when we told her "no" it all went down from there. she almost seemed mad that we simply wanted water. every time she came over to the table it was awkward. she was completely unfriendly and was practically throwing plates at us. when she'd come over we literally were laughing because the whole situation was so obsurd.
towards the end of the meal, we were all still eating mind you, she came over and asked if we wanted boxes. jennie said she wasn't sure yet and i said that yes, in a bit i would like a box. a few minutes later she does a drive-by asking "did you say you DID want boxes?" yes, sure, bring us boxes.
so she brings the boxes over and we're all slowing down. i'm eating a bit of salad and she starts putting away the leftovers for jennie and melissa. she then asks me for not only my leftovers but also my fork so she can scrape it in the box. hmm, maybe you just should have left the boxes with us? as i'm still eating my salad, she's asking me for my bread plate so she can clear the table off. she then pointed to the salad bowl and said "do you just want to finish that salad, HUN?" she called me hun and melissa lost it. so the waitress completely clears off the table as i'm still eating my salad.
it was unforgettable, you can say that.
anyway. we had a great time and hope to do it more often!
thanks, guys. seriously. thank you.

a few weeks later

we weren't able to get around to doing the tile behind the stove as quickly as i had hoped, but we did get it finished last week. before finishing, however, we had plenty of things go wrong.
i am in the process of also trying to repaint the bathroom but i have to wait until dave can patch a hole that has been there since dave and our friend installed the ventilation fan 2 1/2 years ago. he thought it would be an easy thing to do which is why i had him working on that at the same time as the tile in the kitchen. well, it wasn't so easy after all. he ended up having to patch over the entire electrical outlet, cut a new hole, and then re-wire. needless to say, it still isn't done (i'm hoping it will be finished today).
well, as dave started on that project (oh yeah, after he spent well over an hour installing a new ceiling fan in the kitchen which has LED bulbs for the light and ends up giving off NO light which simply means he now has to take that one down and put up a new one) i decided i would "help out" in the kitchen and remove the plastic piece that was behind the stove. the good news is, it came off very easily. the bad news, and why wouldn't there be since we were having project disaster day, was that when i moved the stove out there was a pop and a spark and then the stove wouldn't work. i was in a near panic thinking about how we were now going to have to buy a new stove. dave ended up going downstairs and finding that it had just blown a fuse. phew.
after i had removed the plastic piece, i gently moved the stove back into place. but then, an even louder pop and bigger spark. we went downstairs only to find that this time it was not a fuse. now i really was in a panic.
because of the day poor dave had he didn't look at the stove until the next evening. he opened up the panel behind the stove and found that one of the wires simply came off. something that never should have happened and was the fault of the people that had put the whole thing together. dave was able to put the wire back in place and tighten all of the other ones and we were back in business. no new stove needs to be bought.
we planned on tiling last saturday and after several things went wrong i figured it would never happen. dave finally started on it a little after 4pm on saturday and actually finished less than an hour and a half later! a day later we grouted and now we can check the kitchen off of the list. well, except for the fan that still needs to be taken down and replaced and then the new tile floor that we plan on putting in in the near future as well.
but it's looking great and dave has done a great job!

mother's day brunch

mom is impossible to buy for and in may we have to come up with something for her birthday (although she says she doesn't have a birthday, we make her celebrate it) and mother's day. this year we gave her a little something for her birthday and then decided to get the whole family together and take her out to brunch for mother's day.
jenn and i saw that the rock financial showplace was having a mother's day brunch and after calling around (pretty much last minute) to several places, we decided to give them a try.
the brunch was delicious and was the first brunch (outside of a shoney's $4.99 all you can eat breakfast bar....big boy to us midwesterners) for justin. dave and justin fell in love with the cheesecake bar, hayden ate his weight in watermelon, rainah loved the chocolate covered pretzel, and talan ate whatever we put in front of him.
i had told hayden days before that on sunday, when we went to eat, he was going to pretend to be 3, almost 4. he thought it was "crazy" but went along with the plan. i coached him not to say anything to anybody unless they asked. then he'd have to tell them he was 3. we were not about to pay $12 for a kid who would eat less then the two babies at the table!
nobody ever asked, and hayden actually ate more then we've seen him eat all month. he even ate bacon and asked for seconds!
after brunch we all headed back to mom and dad's to hang out and have some cake and ice cream for mom's birthday (dad was kind and got a cake that said "happy mother's day" even though we all knew it was for her birthday). unfortunately, dad was not feeling well and went upstairs to rest (not sure how that went with all of the noise coming from downstairs). hopefully you're doing better today, dad!
we all had a great time being together and eating, of course. happy mutha's day to all you mutha's out there.

after leaving church and running to a store , we still had a lot of time to kill before brunch. dave thought it would be fun to speed through the parking lot making me almost puke. hayden loved it and talan slept. after awhile dave asked hayden if he wanted to try. so hayden got the chance to learn to drive. in the rain. :

talan was so hungry on the way to brunch he had to double fist it:

mr. happy and mr. grumpy

although they both look happy in these pictures, the shirts are very fitting. i doubt talan will ever be able to wear hayden's shirt as a hand me down unless things go terribly wrong.

a visit from aunt ruth

on sunday, aunt ruth came from florida to visit. it was the first time she had met talan and rainah and we haven't seen her since jenn's baby shower.
hayden remembered her from our visit to florida and asked if we could go back again so he could swim in their pool.
we had a delicious bbq for lunch and then we were able to spend the rest of the day outside because the weather was so great.
rainah got chalk all over her. talan tried to eat the chalk. dave taught hayden how to tackle (just what he needs to know). dad and i took pictures, of course.
it was great seeing you, aunt ruth! next time, bring uncle jeff! see you guys in august!
